OVERVIEW

The process for admissions in 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 26 IIITs and 29 Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other-GFTIs) is managed by JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority), and the process is popularly known as JoSAA counselling. The JEE Main and Advanced 2020 qualified candidates aspiring for admission in IITs, NITs, and IIITs are eligible to take part in the counseling process and will have to register for JoSAA 2020.

The Joint seat allocation process was introduced, cause there was an idea to make the whole admission process more smooth, efficient and faster.

In 2018 Punjab Engineering College (Chandigarh), Jawaharlal Nehru University (Delhi) and International Institute of Information Technology (Bhubaneswar) also joined the JoSAA counselling process.

“Why so serious” For JoSAA Counselling

JoSAA counselling process is the next step (of course first one is the ‘qualifying exam’) for a student to get his/her dream college or dream branch. Many students even after getting a good rank, fail to get the college and branch for their rank because of not filling the counseling process properly. The counselling should be awarded as much importance as their qualifying exam by the students.

An example for ‘Counselling of Stupid’ episode 1: I knew a guy who had 2000 rank in JEE Main but got a college and branch that one gets at 24,000 because of not properly filling out choices in order.

So BE REALLY CAREFUL WHILE FILLING YOUR CHOICES.

SOME TIPS THAT YOU, CAN’T REFUSE

Here are some tips from my personal experience that can be helpful in your journey through the whole counselling process:

1) This tip is for the people who have already decided their career path. If you plan on getting a job just after your B.Tech then you should look for the best combination of “College + Branch”.

But if you plan to go for further studies (not really linked with engineering) like for CAT or UPSC then you should opt for the best college you are getting for your rank.

‘Counselling Of Stupid’ episode 2: This time I won’t point out, but IIT BHU Electronics is a much better choice than IIT Bombay Civil at 2000 rank in JEE Advance if you are not future Planned (after your B.Tech) and provided that you don’t have a branch preference of your own.

2) If you are planning to go for Indian Engineering Services (IES) then you should prefer branches like Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics in order.

3) Branch Change is an option in many colleges but don’t totally rely on it.

4) Don’t go crazy over CS branch only because of high placements, just strike the right balance between ‘College + Branch’ at your rank.

5) I personally don’t prefer new IITs or other new Colleges whose first batch is yet to be graduated if you have other good options. So do proper research on every college from your seniors before filling them out as your choice.
6) If you are not getting a decent seat in NITs then you can opt for the IIITs that run in NIT campuses. So that you will get most of the privileges of an NIT college including Placement and a good campus.

The Process

There are 3 parts in the process of the JoSAA Counselling:

1) Choice Filling: The choice filling will start on 6th Oct and will be lasting for a week. You will be filling the choices of branch and college in order of your preferences. You should only fill those choices which you want.

2) Mock rounds: Last year two Mock Rounds were conducted. They will give you a rough idea about the choice you will get in the First Round. You can also change your filled choices during Mock Rounds.

One should not ‘Lock’ the filled choices before the Second Mock Round in case you want to make changes during Mock Rounds.

3) The 6 Rounds: Students will be allocated seats according to their rank, preferences, category, and availability of seats. After each round, you will get 3 options i.e. Float, Slide and Freeze.

Freeze will lock the seat you are getting in that round and you won’t be able participate in further rounds.

Slide will move your pointer up in your choice list in further rounds but for the same college which you were allocated in that round. In simple words, your college will remain same but your branch will upgrade.

Float will move your pointer up in your choice list in further rounds regardless of your college. In simple words, your college and your branch both will change.
